Equipment available to us assists in making our message eye catching and it is referred to as audio-visual aids. As a result, the communication becomes more lucid, vibrant, stimulating, and intriguing. The Technology of communication is rapidly becoming more advanced and sophisticated .The immense possibilities of exploiting it sometime fascinate the speaker so much that he permits technology to take over. Audio-visual aids can be central to a presentation, as they are often able to illustrate difficult concepts more easily than words. Always ask yourself if using AV aids will contribute to your presentation, and never be tempted to use them unnecessarily.

Choosing AV Aids

There is a range of AV aids to suit different types of presentation. Such aids can sometimes distance you from the audience, however, so use them only if they are appropriate and helpful. AV aids have varying levels of complexity; many require a source of electricity, which can lead to problems if the power fails; others may need to be designed or installed by specialists and may be difficult to use. Audio –visual aids could be differentiating in Low complexity, Medium complexity, and High complexity.

Low complexity aids are Handouts, writing Board, Flip-Chart.

Medium complexity aids are Slide Projector, Overhead Projector, and Audio System.

High complexity aids are Video, Multimedia, and Computer graphics.

Different AV aids suit different sizes of audience but if your resources are limited you can adopt your AV aids to suit any audience. For example, if you are using computer graphics but want to avoid losing definition of images by enlarging them too much then provide each member of the audience with handouts of the computer graphics you are showing on screen . Alternatively, if you are presenting to a large audience, project the images on to several large screens.

Basic principles and Guidelines

  • Decide the content you wish to support with aid.
  • Choose the appropriate medium.
  • Integrate the aid with the presentation.
  • Choose a suitable place for the equipment to be kept. Whatever you present through the aid should be capable of being heard or seen by everyone in the audience.
  • Ensures that you have a basic technical knowledge of how to operate the equipment.
  • When not in use, keep the equipment away or at least covered.
  • Think carefully about which items you may need in order to make proper use of your chosen AV aids.
  • Audiences read on screen material faster than you can speak it, so do not read out loud.

Making an impact

AV aids help us to use new technology while teaching or delivering presentation. It helps us to deliver the material effectively in a short span as well as you may find that you can make information easier to understand and express abstract ideas more clearly by adding design elements to visual aids . These days accent has become a crux due to dialect languages. Sometimes what the message you want to convey, i.e. not clearly understood by the listener. In that case AV aids help to understand the message more clearly and also create interest among the audience. Presently, smart classes are being run in schools/colleges and it has been possible only with adventment of AV aids. Even deaf and dumb students are capable to study properly with the help of AV aids. Captivate motivation, attention, concentration & retention by using Audio Visual Aids.
