Film Making is a piece of art which is not everyone’s cup of tea. A film maker has to be really creative as he/she has to take the ownership of the entire film; and most commonly has to play the dual role of producer and director. Traditionally, the roles of producer and director are clearly distinguished. The responsibilities of each position are great enough to keep a single person occupied for each role. It’s inefficient for the roles to be combined. A filmmaker has no clear separation of responsibilities. He/she must do whatever it takes to get the job done, because most independent filmmakers work outside the ‘system’. Film Making is not like any other traditional 9 to 6 job. It is an innovative work where the film maker is not a hired employee rather he has to take care of the film as the originator from concept to execution to release (and beyond). Different stages of film making include: Writing and Development, Pre-production (or Prep), Production, Post Production (or Post), Marketing and Publicity, Release, Sales and Distribution, Royalty and Maintenance. Filmmaking, much like films themselves, encompasses lots of subgenres. Filmmakers can be TV producers, Instagram celebrities, or art house directors. But they have to be prepared at the onset to budget for some of the expenses like entrance fees, cost of creating and mailing DCPs (Digital Cinema Package), shipping and insurance, traveling and living costs of attending the festival and networking, costs of marketing material like posters, business cards, etc.
